A peaceful day

A Quiet Day, oil painting 12" X 16" on stretched canvas. Available on coffee cups, mugs, face masks etc. on my website.  While we are in spring in Idaho (lots of flowers blooming, pollen causing allergies etc.), I was thinking of a quiet, peaceful time in Maine.  This was a scene in the Belgrade Lakes area of Maine in the fall.  I had a hard time with getting the greens dark enough to look like my photo, but I am still learning.  I have made charts of different color combinations and that helps me too with the mixing.

Sitting by a lake anywhere in the world gives a sense of peace. I remember being upset and sitting by a river when I was younger, or riding my bike to the end of the peninsula to sit by the Long Island Sound when I was growing up.  I will be glad when the shelter at home stuff is done.  While I am an introvert, I do miss a little socializing.  We have been going to our sabbath services online with Zoom. It is not the same.

Now I will turn back to spring and play with an image of poppies. I think that will be fun for my next painting.

Earth Day

for Earth Day

I have found strength in fire
the fire in the burning bush
the eternal light
the sabbath candles

the souls of my ancestors call me
to continue their traditions
linking my children
from revelation at Mount Sinai
to a torah for today

to find a voice
to chant the sacred words
to sing and dance in joy
to sorrow at a world gone mad with materialism
to strive for a connection to all living things
for all are holy
infused with the flow of spirit

from the smallest seedling
struggling to grow in a polluted lot
to the largest mammals facing extinction
from our desecration of their environment

the eagle is still with me in my dreams
soaring over the mountains and lakes
but in reality I am the turtle
plodding along
slowly creating change
one poem at a time

I remembered this old poem I wrote for earth day so many years ago. Now I mostly paint as I am retired. I haven't been writing much as I've gotten older, but I still enjoy looking back and reading my old poems.

Abstracts

Playing with colors during the pandemic. We had to cancel our trips and I was tired of painting landscapes so I just played with paints.  Have not thought of a title yet.

This panel was a landscape I was unhappy with. I washed some of the paint off, let it dry and sandpapered more.  Then I covered with Red Iron Oxide paint.  I played with some colors on this one too. I am not sure if it is done yet. I might add more splashes of colors. Thinking of title: Celebration.

While these were fun, I will probably go back to landscape painting or flowers soon.  Those are challenging, but I enjoy the challenge.  Hoping to be able to travel again next month.  We had canceled our plans for this month.  Still too dangerous and Idaho is still on shelter at home orders.
